The City of Ottawa 2008 Civic Awards recognize the contributions of Jennifer Mix and the OHS Community Planting Committee.

The Ottawa Horticultural Society is very proud of the City of Ottawa's recognition of our member Jennifer Mix and the OHS Community Planting Committee.

City of Ottawa Distinguished Civic Awards - Environment – Jennifer Mix

Jennifer Mix

"Jennifer Mix, Co-chair of the Ottawa Horticultural Society’s (OHS) Community Planting Committee, was the project leader, primary organizer and major worker bee of the incredibly successful Plant Recreation Centre (PRC) garden project located behind the Vietnamese Monument at Somerset and Preston. Each year the Committee chooses a site in the city on which to plan and carry out the planting and beautification of public lands. Three large perennial garden beds were designed, constructed and planted immediately behind the Monument; two shrub gardens on either side of a semi-circular seating area were similarly created next to the PRC building; and a wide gravel and stone-dust path. Jennifer was involved at all stages of the project hosting many meetings with community volunteers and a neighbourhood landscaper developing the initial garden plan. This neighbourhood, with some of the lowest per-capita-incomes and lowest amounts of green-space in the city, now has a beautiful corner garden behind the Vietnamese Monument presenting an eye-catching delight to the front facade of the PRC. Jennifer’s tireless efforts, her unbounded enthusiasm and dedication for this project were an inspiration to all. Jennifer’s example of working so hard in a neighbourhood not her own, continues to spur on local volunteers to ensure high quality maintenance of the garden in the coming years. She is most deserving of our recognition for her commitment to the beautification of our City."
