Community Planting on Byron

Project of the OHS Community Planting Committee - Spring 2010

Photographs by Laurie Graham, Jennifer Mix and Jean Stalker

The first 2010 project of the Community Planting Committee was the back yard of a group home on Byron Avenue. This yard was heavily shaded by maple trees and very little was growing there. A chemical analysis showed that the soil was almost completely devoid of plant nutrients.

The Public Planting Committee gathered and took a measure of the site.

Next came rototilling, which is very hard work.

A call went out to the OHS for donations of shade-loving plants, and lots of them came in.

A task force planted the newcomers, with generous servings of sheep manure.

All that remained was to scatter the grass seed - a mixture of fescues from Wildflower Farm, marketed under the name of "Eco-Lawn". It is claimed that Eco-Lawn looks good even without mowing..

Twelve days later, the Eco-lawn was well on its way.

The Community Planting Committee urges all OHS members to come and join our merry band of community-minded gardeners. We do a lot of sweating, have a lot of fun, and get to know each other a lot better, all while contributing to the beauty and comfort of our city. Please consider joining us.

Community Planting Committee Chair: Jennifer Mix
Committee members: Laurie Graham, Gillian Macdonnell, Margaret Scratch, Jean Stalker
