2010 Program of Events

Meetings are at the Tom Brown arena 141 Bayview avenue (at Scott)
on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm unless noted otherwise
Except for special events, all meetings are free to the public. Everyone welcome!
OHS board meetings are held at the McNabb Community Centre, 180 Percy St. at Gladstone on the second Monday of the Month at 7:30 in the Community Room and are open to all members of the Society.

September Flower & Vegetable Show
From Seed to Flowering Plant:
Filling a treasure chest with 50 years of knowledge. A presentation that will appeal to everyone, by a perennial favorite presenter. Speaker: Marilyn Light

Tue., Oct. 26 Monthly Meeting Gardening Without Flowers: Everyone loves flowers, but we all know that blooms can be short-lived, leaving the garden uninspiring. Join Paul as he presents examples of dramatic and colourful garden spaces created with a combination of attractive foliage plants and garden ornament.
Speaker: Paul Zammit, Director, Toronto Botanical Gardens. A popular and engaging speaker, Paul has given presentations at many garden clubs and large garden shows such as the Canadian National Exhibition, Success With Gardening, and Canada Blooms, and other horticultural trade shows in both Canada and the United States.
Deadline for entering the OHS photo competition.

Tue., Jan. 26 Monthly Meeting Gardens of France: A dramatic & vivid slide show presentation.
Speaker: Linda Thorne
Linda Thorne owned and operated Thorne & Co. which was a store for gardeners from 1990-2005. Since 1998 she has lead garden tours to England, Ireland, France, Tuscany and Holland.
Presentation of OHS Photo Competition awards.

Tue., Feb. 23 Monthly Meeting Vegetable Tales: Focuses on the interesting historical tidbits that are revealed different heirloom varieties of garden vegetables and our profound connection to the past.
Speaker:  Brian Henbest, Supervisor Heritage Programs, Upper Canada Village.

Tue., March 23 Monthly Meeting Making Our Urban Yards Eco Friendly
Speaker: George Bushell. George Bushell gardens organically in an allotment just outside Ottawa & teaches courses on organic gardening.
Sat., Apr. 10 District 2 Annual General Meeting The District 2 Annual General Meeting will be hosted by the Kemptville Horticultural Society in 2010. The theme is "Gardening Au Natrural" Location: WB George Centre, Kemptville College. Cost : $25.00 per person. Speakers: Edythe Falconer, Gardening au Natural; Rob Caron and Dave Dunn, Rideau Woodland Ramble; Lyle Slater, Upper Canada Cranberries. Details are on the District 2 web page.
Tue., Apr. 12 Board Meeting Location: McNabb Community Centre, Community room
Fri., Apr. 23 - Sun., Apr. 25 District 2 Indoor Plant Show at Ottawa Is Blooming. Ottawa Is Blooming is annual Kanata Garden & Landscape Show. Members of the OHS are entitled to a discounted admission to the show of $5. Also, all OHS members are encoured to enter the District 2 plant and flower show. Tue., Apr. 27 Monthly Meeting and Indoor Show Floral Digital Photography: The presentation will focus on the elements necessary to take good pictures of flowers & plants.
Speaker: Gordon Hopkins. Gordon Hopkins is an avid photographer, popular presenter & member of the RA photography club.

Sale Friends of the Farm Plant Sale
Presented by Friends of the Farm with specialty growers and nurseries. A perfect Mothers Day outing!
Master Gardeners are available to answer your questions.
Location: Changed to parking lot near ornamental greenhouses, C.E.F. See map

Admission fee: Donation to Food Bank or $5.00. The OHS will be selling plants there.

Tue., May 25 Monthly Meeting - Plant Auction & Sale OHS Plant Auction & Sale
Auctioneer: Marilyn Light
Extensive selection of choice plants are auctioned, followed by sale of many popular plant varieties.
Members please bring specimens to auction and sell.
Mon., Jun. 14 Board Meeting Note: Frequently this meeting takes place at a member's home, call ahead to confirm the meeting location.
