JANUARY-FEBRUARY GARDEN NEWS

The FIRST GARDEN MEETING of the 1974 season will be held on Monday, January 8, at 8: 15 p.m. in the McNabb Recreation Centre on Percy St. near Gladstone Ave. (entrance via Percy St. parking-lot). This will be a "Film Night" with showing of "The Seasons"; "The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes" and "What Price Beauty" and a repeat showing of the Garden Photography Competition slides. On February 14, the "INDOOR GARDENERS GROUP" will meet in McLeod-Stewarton Church downstairs parlor at 1:45 p.m. to hear Mrs. Anne Ginns speak on "Basic Botany to Help Plants Thrive".

A Visit to ELBA, the. greenhouse complex at Carleton. University, has been arranged through good friend Dr. Bill Illman and the Tour will commence at 10 a.m. promptly on Saturday morning, February 16. There will be only one complete tour; parking will be available on Lot 3. See you there.

GARDEN MEETING NUMBER TWO will be held on Monday, February 25, at 8: 15 p.m. and again in the McNabb Recreation Centre; the subject will be "Everything You Always Wanted to KNOW ABOUT GARDENING and Were Afraid to Ask": an illustrated talk by the well-known authority, Mr. Arthur Buckley, and he will discuss some of the more uncommon tasks that give gardening such diversity.

The TORONTO SPRING GARDEN SHOW; the Toronto Garden Club will again stage their big show in the O'Keefe Centre in downtown Toronto from March 6 to 10. The Society's Special Events Committee is considering a Charter Bus so that Society members may visit the show as a group. The Bus would likely leave Ottawa at 7:30 a.m. from Billings Bridge Plaza or some other central point; arrive at the O'Keefe about 1 p.m. and leave from there about 6 p.m. and return to Ottawa. Cost of transport would be $13.00 per person plus $2.50 for a ticket to the Show (Senior Citizens $1.50), plus meals for the day. Anyone interested should book with the William Bells at the January meeting or write or contact them at 19 Lipstan Ave., for information. Increased costs do not allow for refunds.

The INDOOR GARDENERS GROUP meets again on March 14 at 8 p.m. in the McLeod-Stewarton Church and Mrs. Helena Jacob will present a Talk and Demonstration on "DECORATIVE ARRANGEMENTS". Mrs. Jacob's outstanding ability in Show competition should be most helpful for new show exhibitors. This Group will also meet at 2 p.m. in McLeodStewarton United Church parlor on Thursday, April 11, to make preparations and encourage entries for the ANNUAL HOUSE PLANTS SHOW which will be held on Saturday, April 27, in the HALL of RIDEAU PARK UNITED CHURCH on Alta Vista Drive. There is also a prospective Bus Trip to the Montreal Botanical Gardens, probably in May.

Further GARDEN MEETINGS are assured for March 11, with "Tree & Shrub Pruning" by Mr. lan McLaughlin of Kemptville College; on March 25 with "Home Landscaping" by Mr. M. Oldengarm of McArthur School; on April 5 with the subject "Window Boxes and Patio Planters" by W.M. Cavaye plus a panel on "Spring Garden Problems". The Daffodil Classes and the Tulip Show will follow in May. All this assures much activity on the part of the Officers and Directors and further newsletters will keep you posted about further activities including Spring and Summer projects to "Garden for those who cannot garden for themselves" or who need help.

At the Annual Meeting last December the 1974 Officers were elected as were all the directors and while all these people are willing to work hard, they do need your help. Please offer any help you can give even to setting up the chairs for meetings or digging for half a day in one of the projects. New ideas or talk subjects would be most welcome for these would be helpful as well as necessary for the democratic process. An important way to keep the rapidly rising administrative costs down would be by paying your membership fee now for though it is modest, it is essential (at this date only 150 members are paid up). Single Membership is $2.00; Family Membership is $4.00. Repeated requests for your cooperation seem necessary, even though distasteful and expensive.

President Cole and all the members of the Board send greetings to every member and pray you will all have a good share of health and happiness in 1974.

Yours horticulturally,

and still pro tem Secretary-Treasurer, William M. Sandy Cavaye.

MARCH-APRIL GARDEN NEWS

GARDEN MEETINGS THREE and FOUR will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of March at 8:15 p.m. in the McNabb Recreation Centre, Percy St. near Gladstone Avenue (entrance via Percy St. parking-lot).

On Monday, March 11th, the subject will be topical: "Tree and Shrub Pruning"; the speaker will be Mr. lan McLaughlin, who is on staff at the Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology. On Monday, March 25th, "Home Landscaping" and the speaker will be Mr. M. Oldengarm who is Horticultural Instructor at McArthur High School.

GARDEN MEETING NUMBER FIVE will be held on the second Monday of April, on April 8th at 8: 15 p.m. and also in the McNabb Centre; the speaker will be William M. Cavaye (now a retired senior citizen but militant), and the subject will be "Window Boxes and Patio Planters"; there will also be a panel on "Spring Garden Problems". Garden questions will be answered at all of these meetings and you may submit them to the Secretary before the meetings if you wish.

The "INDOOR GARDENERS" will meet on Thursday, March.14th, in Mcleod-Stewarton Church (parking in the rear). This will be an evening meeting at 8 p.m.; one of the Society's outstanding show exhibitors, Mrs. R.F. Jacob, will speak about "Decorative Arrangements". This Group will also meet again on Thursday, April 11th, at McLeod-Stewarton, in the afternoon at 1:45 p.m. to discuss plans and preparations for the "HOUSE PLANT SHOW". Call Mrs. E.W. Gustafson if you want any further information re the Indoor Gardener activities.

The AFRICAN VIOLET and HOUSE PLANT SHOW will be held in the Hall of Rideau Park United Church on Saturday, April 27th (the church is located at the corner of Alta Vista Drive and Cunningham Avenue). The Show will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Every member of the Society is invited and urged to exhibit plants in this show and there are classes for every kind of house plant you are likely to have. These exhibits should be placed in the Hall, assisted by the committee, some time between 9 a.m. and noon and should be removed promptly at 5 p.m., so that the Hall can be cleared efficiently. Bring all your friends (and enemies, too, if you must) to view the show; enjoy the facilities of the Tea Room, furnished by the Rideau Church U.C.W., and you may purchase plants from the Sales-Table. Tickets for the Tea may be purchased from any of the Group Committee at our Garden Meetings. If you have never shown before, this would be a good time to "get your feet wet". It's fun to show and there is always someone around to help; see you there.

GARDEN MEETING NUMBER SIX will be held in the McNabb Centre on Monday, May 6th, at 8: 15 p.m., and will feature the Daffodil-Narcissus Classes, as listed in the 1974 Year Book, as well as a lecture by Mr. Claude MacDonald, long-time officer of the City View-Nepean Hort. Society, and an exhibitor and judge of vegetables who will speak on "Vegetables and on Preparing them for Showing". This will be useful information for novices in the growing and showing of specimen vegetables. There will be a Question and Answer period at this meeting for your assistance.

The ANNUAL TULIP SHOW will be held this year on Saturday, May 25th, in a new location - in the Hall of Woodroffe United Church, between Carling Avenue and Richmond Road on Woodroffe Avenue North, between 2 and 5 p.m.

We also expect to carry out a number of "Planting Projects" in late May and early June, primarily for "those who cannot garden for themselves". Please volunteer by phoning your name to Dr. or Mrs. Oswald Peck at 234-4959 - give a few hours of garden service for these Society projects

We do need some younger volunteers to give an hour or two to assist in setting up chairs, tables, etc., for all of our Garden Meetings and Shows; please accept that this appeal is to you and not to somebody else; many of us are willing enough but have to accept our physical capabilities as they are.

The February visit to ELBA at Carleton University was a great success, mainly because of the self-sacrifice and dedication of Dr. William IlIman of the University and it is hoped that the Society members will support this aspect of the Carleton University contribution to our Society members, and to the public at large. Our friend and mentor, A.R. Buckley, again did much to provide impetus to our gardening on February 25th and by the time this goes to print, the Bus Outing to the Toronto Garden Club's Spring Show at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto will have taken place. Again the Society is indebted to the William Bells for their continued contribution to Society interests.

Society Officers acknowledge gratitude to so many members and friends, who continue to donate generously prizes for the Flower Shows and for special Planting Projects for the purchase of plants and other materials.

We are most grateful for members' support by payment of the small annual membership fee, but must report that almost 200 members are still not in good standing. "82 Years Young" - we need all the help we can get.

Yours horticulturally, WILLlAM M. CAVAYE Secretary-Treasurer

This is a final reminder that almost a hundred of our members are still not in good standing for 1974. Repeated requests are expensive and distasteful but lack of funds gives the Treasurer ulcers; so please check your standing and advise us of your intent.

The 1974 Year Book is now being distributed. Extra copies for publicity and for new members may be obtained at any of the meetings. The Society is deeply grateful for the untiring and unselfish efforts of Chairman John M. Robinson for this contribution to the Society's work. Please support the advertisers who make the book possible.

Society officers are happy to learn that many members are taking advantage of the offer of Garden Plots by the National Capital Commission and commend this community effort; we hope to have special classes for N.C.C. gardeners in 1975.

The Annual Convention of our parent body, the Ontario Horticultural Association, will be held on June 12th to 14th in Niagara Falls. The scenic drive is always a pleasure. For further information, and for early reservations to avoid disappointment, call Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bell at 225-7207.

The Annual Autumn Flower Show will again be held in Marquees at the Central Experimental Farm on Saturday and Sunday, August 24th and 25th in co-operation with the City View-Nepean Society and together with District 2 O.H.A. Show.

We urge all members to take part in all of these activities and to volunteer to assist in staging them; many hands make light work; if you can spare some time - tell someone about it because you must first let us know you are willing. Your participation in some capacity is more urgent than ever.

Officers of the Society send best wishes to all who have been unable to take part in Society projects due to illness or other reasons; come see us soon.

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER GARDEN NEWS

Officers of the Society have been happy to note that many new members have joined the Society in the last few months. We welcome your attendance and participation in the garden meetings and flower shows.

Every member is invited to attend a SOCIAL EVENING in the McNabb Recreation Centre (entrance via the parking-lot on Percy Street near Gladstone Avenue) on Monday, November 25th, at 8: 15 p.m. It is a pleasure to announce that Mr. Murray Outhet of the National Capital Commission's Parks and Grounds Division will present an illustrated talk on "COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION". Gardeners should all be concerned about what is being done and planned for our environment. Refreshments will be served at this meeting at the nominal cost of $1.00 per person.

We also remind all Garden Photographers, especially novices, that entries for the seven classes in the Garden Photography Competition, listed on page 19 of the Year Book, should be submitted to the Secretary or to Mr. Jack Cowan by November 12th, so that judging may be completed before the Annual Meeting.

We also remind you that Agriculture Canada's CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW will be featured in the Main Greenhouses on Maple Avenue at the Central Experimental Farm until November 17th from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

The "INDOOR GARDENERS GROUP" will meet on Thursday evening, November 14th, at 8 p.m. in the downstairs parlour of Mcleod-Stewarton Church, corner of Argyle and Bank Streets (parking behind the Church). The subject for this meeting will be the many phases of "GROWING AFRICAN VIOLETS". Further information may be obtained from Group President Mrs. E.W. Gustafson. If you are interested in plants grown indoors, you will learn much from the leaders of this well-informed group.

Messrs. J.M. Robinson, John Frith and C.M. Brown have completed the judging of this year's Garden Competition and we hope to present the Winners with Trillium Award Certificates early in the new year.

PLEASE RETAIN THIS NOTICE as a reminder that the ANNUAL MEETING of the Society will be held on Monday, December 16th, at 8: 15 p.m. in the McNabb Recreation Centre. At that time brief Reports of 1974 Activities and a Financial Statement will be presented. It is also mandatory that the Election of a President, two Vice-Presidents, 5 Directors, 2 Auditors and as many as will agree to act as assistant Directors, will take place. Again we must reiterate our plea for more volunteers to assist in our busy programme. We have tireless, willing officers but they need your help to make the job lighter.

For the December 16th Meeting we also ask any or all of you to bring along for this one evening display, one or more of any Christmas Decorations you have made or are making for home use - e.g. door swags, mantel or table decorations, gift wraps or similar items, so that more of us can learn the know-how. We hope to screen the prize-winning colour slides from the Garden Photography Competition and present the All-Year Challenge Trophies at this meeting too.

We again acknowledge, with gratitude, the financial support we receive from City Hall, and from the Province of Ontario. We thank Agriculture Canada for the help we receive from officers of that Department. We are grateful to our friends of the City View-Nepean and other Valley Horticultural Societies for their continued co-operation. We appreciate the support of our Year Book Advertisers and ask you to support them. We thank the Ottawa newspapers and the Radio and Television stations for publicity received. Many Society officers and members contribute cash and merchandise to the Show prize lists. All this helps us to promote Gardening by staging garden meetings, flower shows and community projects. We earnestly request your support of Society activities by participation, by volunteering service in some capacity, by renewing the annual membership fee at the meetings or by mail. Paid-up members, including all members of recent date, will receive new cards for 1975 soon.

President Cole and the Society's officers send best wishes and regards to all members, with special thoughts for those who have been ill or otherwise unable to attend meetings.

Yours for Good Gardening, WllLlAM M. CAVAYE, Secretary.
