OHS Minute Book 1854-1859 Back to the web versionA meeting of the persons fvourable to the formation of a Horticultural Society in Bytown, was held in the Town hHall on Thursday evening last. His worship the Mayor, by request, presided, and Dr. Sewell acted as Secretary pro tem. The following resolutions were carried unanimously:
1st. Proposed by Mr. R. W. Scott and seconded by Mr. R S. Casells-
"That for the encouragement of an extended and improved cultivation of Fruits, Flowers and
Vegetables in Bytown and the surrounding country, this meeting do resolve itself into an
Association to be known by the name of "The Ottawa Horticultural Society."
2nd. Moved by Mr. John L. Campbell, seconded by Mr. S. C. Chapman,-
"That this object Shall be sought to be effected by means of prizes (money or honourary) and
by public shows, of which latter there shall be at least three in each year, the principal
or annual show to be held in September in each year."
3rd. Moved by G.R. Burke, seconded by Mr. Donald Robertson.
"Than a subscription of one dollar per annum, and one dollar entrance, shall constitute
membership; open to both sexes. Members shall be entitled to visit the shows and enter
objects for exhibition without farther charge.
4th. Moved by Dr. VanCortlandt, seconded by Dr. Sewell
"That Messrs. R.W. Scott, R.S. Cassels, Donald RObertson, C. Chapman, Jas. Fitzgibbon, F.D.
Wood, J.L. Campbell, Jos. Aumond, Godfry P. Baker, A. Lafontaine, C. Bradley, C.H. Carriere,
L.M. Coutlee, W.T. Aylen, A. McDonnell of Sand Point, John Supple, the mover and the
seconder, be appointed a committee to procure subscribers to the "
Ottawa horticultural society: the R.S. Cassells, be appointed Treasurer pro tem; and that
the first meeting of the subscribers be held on the first Thursday on April next, at 7 p.m.
in the Town Hall.
