Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Garden Party
Yearbook 1918 Back to the web versionTWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY GARDEN PARTY
A quarter of a century ago the Ottawa Horticultural Society was founded by a small group of public spirited citizens and enthusiastic gardeners. From modest beginnings the Society grew in influence and "Membership" until today it is the largest and most progressive organization of its kind in Canada. It has ever kept in view the exalted ideal of its founders and it has striven to realize their ambition to make Ottawa the city beautiful by making it the city of gardens. Its record of achievement is written wherever a home garden is planted and tended for to its influence and encouragement the garden makers of Ottawa largely owe their inspiration and success. No more effective influence has been exerted for the up building and beautification of the Capital then that of the Ottawa Horticultural Society. Only two of the original board of directors survive-Mr. R. B. Whyte and Mr. John Graham, whose interest and enthusiasm are sustained in undiminished measure. The anniversary celebration will take the form of a garden party in Paeony time, to be held in Mr. Whyte's garden, at which the hosts will be Mr. Whyte and Mr. Graham. The actual date of the event will be announced later.
PLANTING OF PUBLIC GROUNDS
The Society has decided to resume the policy adopted some years ago and temporarily suspended of beautifying the grounds about public institutions by planting them with shrubs and other permanent materials. A beginning will be made this year with the Protestant General Hospital, on Rideau street, and the grounds of other hospitals and institutions will be dealt with as the resources of the Society permit.
SCHOOL GARDEN WORK
With the object of encouraging school garden work, the Society has appropriated $20 to be awarded in prizes for School Gardens.
