The President's Message
At the beginning of our sixty-sixth year of operation we pause briefly to do some stock taking and to chart a course for future activities. Each year brings its developments and experiences familiar to that season alone, and therein dwells a source of perpetual interest to all members of the Society.
Last year membership increased by one hundred and four; a public address system came into our possession; forty-one kodachrome slides were added to our collection; the McGregor Easson Memorial Trophy was presented to the Society for annual competition; a one day workshop in floral arrangements was initiated. These are but a few of the highlights portraying the past season.
For 1958 our membership objective has been established at eight hundred; a garden competition in a newly developed area of Ottawa is included in our plans; alterations have been made to the prize list of the African Violet Show to more fully accommodate its many exhibitors; the program of an O.H.A. interdistrict meeting in Ottawa at Tulip Time, designed to attract visitors from Cornwall in the east to Pembroke and Napanee in the west, wil1 be sponsored by our Society. To make these enterprises, successful, however, we are in need of an active and competent membership.
You may assist the Society by placing an entry on a show table, bringing a friend or neighbour to a meeting, giving assistance to a committee, donating a prize for competition or by soliciting membership.
The main objective of our combined effort is to encourage an ever increasing number of would-be gardeners to-JOIN THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY AND CO-OPERATE FOR BEAUTIFICATION.
H. W. COLE,
President.
