The President's Message
Apprehension that horticultural interest might flag in 1968 as a natural sequel to Centennial enthusiasm proved groundless. Despite Centennial hoopla, 1968 made its mark.
Improvements afforded by our new meeting place at McNabb Community Centre include air conditioning, more readily accessible parking areas, lighted entrances, uniform heating, better acoustics, modern kitchen facilities and a generally more sociable homey atmosphere. These have done much to boost attendance and interest, if not actual membership.
1968 provided 4 major and 2 smaller shows, one at a changed venue. All evoked high praise, particularly the decorative classes, lauded as "never better". New and extra classes at most Shows afforded exhibitors additional scope for their talents.
The July outing by bus to Mount Royal and the Montreal Botanical Gardens proved an invigorating and pleasant diversion.
The Centennial Garden gained further support with our purchase and planting of trees and shrubs of Canadian origin, plus several hundred tulip bulbs, residue of a sizeable shipment purchased for resale to members. Public planting projects had the usual spring and fall support.
Film showings and a social evening, as well as an arrangement workshop added zest to our programme. Meetings have increased in number as a result of commitments for use of present facilities.
May 1969 inspire us to even greater achievements. Let us set as our goal the most beautiful capital of the finest country on earth - your Canada and mine.
