The President's Message

In writing these few words to you as President for the 85th year of our Society I do so conscious of the honour which I have received by election to this office and it will be my endeavour to serve the Society in every way possible. I am grateful that so many of the directors and officers who have served in prior years have seen fit to continue their service to the community.

We need more members, not particularly from the point of view that we want their dollars, for we are not a

Money making concern, but we need support and interest in order that we may be able to pay more and greater dividends in happiness and the development of natural beauty. Will each member try to secure a new member and then bring him to our meetings and flower shows? We will do our best to arouse their interest so that they will become active in the affairs of the Society.

Our programme for 1977 represents a return to the basics of landscaping. However, our Society is blessed with many willing and knowledgeable officers who will be pleased to provide specialized assistance. You need only ask.

In closing, may I remind you that never more than today has our country needed the wholehearted effort of its citizens to develop homeland beauty. If Canada is made more beautiful, her people will love her more and consequently place greater value upon what they possess. In turn, not only will a stronger spirit of unity develop, but a stronger determination to make secure so goodly a heritage. I trust therefore that all our members will feel that the promotion of the aims of our Society, particularly here in the City of Ottawa, is a National Service and well deserving of any contribution that can be made by them.
