The President's Message
As I write these few words, we are locked in the grips of winter looking forward to the time for gardeners. Perhaps our deep snows will bring our gardens through so that 1978 will be an exceptional year for horticulture in Ottawa.
My hopes are that 1978 will prove to be a most successful year for our Society. As you will see by the following pages, the Society has a heavy programme to deal with and you of course realize that success can only be achieved by hearty cooperation. I trust that the efforts of your Directors will receive the wholehearted support of all members.
Regarding our Flower Shows, please remember that horticultural knowledge may be best obtained by exhibiting and attending horticultural exhibitions. Increased interest in our various shows will not only prove helpful to exhibitors but very encouraging to those in charge of the work.
With a view to maintaining the usefulness and attractiveness of our General Meetings, arrangements have been made to include in our programmes practical demonstrations, illustrated lectures and question periods dealing in both general and specialized areas of gardening and flower arranging.
The Ontario Horticultural Association Convention to be held at Kingston, June 14-16, will have as its theme, "Horticulture-A Common Bond". Surely we in the Nation's Capital can particularly take this to heart by an intensive campaign to promote civic beautification. We can start with the view passers by would have of our own front yard. Our senior members have the expertise to suggest or confirm where a tree or shrub might look best, but it takes younger muscles to dig the hole and remove the clay or rocks-the obstacles to healthy growth. Working together, we can ensure that Ottawa is a City of which all Canadians will be proud. Even non-gardeners appreciate the beauty of a well maintained yard and perhaps are not fully aware of the joys of participation. Introduce a neighbour to our Society.
