The Society's Column
TREVOR J. COLE, Acting Secretary
We seem to specialize in bad nights for the Society's Annual General Meeting. Again in 1977, while it was not terribly cold, the driving conditions were bad, it was snowing and the turn-out at the meeting was poor.
For those of you who couldn't get there, the following comments from the President's Address may be of interest.
Total entries in all the Flower Shows were down by 57 from the previous year, at 1129; while the prize money total was down by only $3.75 at $760.75.
About 500 each of annual plants and spring bulbs were paid for by the Society and planted by Society members at the Bronson Home, Glebe Centre, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and the Nicholas Street Youth Hostel.
Commemorative Plaques were prepared for the benches supplied to City Hall the previous year. These were presented to Deputy Mayor Marion Dewar, when she opened the combined flower shows held at the Experimental Farm in August. These plaques have now been installed on the backs of the benches.
The Light Cart donated to the Physiotherapy unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1976 has been much appreciated. Members of the Indoor Gardeners Group have been visiting the hospital each week to assist where possible.
The Ontario Horticultural Association Service A ward was presented to Gladys and Jo Scott at the annual meeting for all the work they have put into the society over the years. Also at this meeting past president Trevor Cole was presented with an Honorary Life Directorship.
Society Awards of Merit were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Eddy and to Mrs. Norma Majors, all of whom are leaving the area after many years of active service to Horticulture.
At the O.H.A. District 2 annual meeting held in Kanata on Sept. 24th, past president Maurice Marshall was elected District Director. He will succeed past president Clarence Brown in this position following the O.H.A. Convention to held in Kingston next June.
Mrs. Irene Taggart and John Robinson were asked to judge a garden competition organised by a condominium housing development in the east end of the city. This necessitated them judging over two hundred gardens.
Society members assisted in staffing the display booth entered by the Ontario Horticultural Association at the Ottawa Winter Fair. They answered questions from the general public on many aspects of gardening, and hopefully, generated some interest in the society.
Mrs. Alice Gillies represented the society at the O.H.A. convention held in Windsor, from June 15th to 17th.
