President's Message - 1981

Yearbook 1981 page 1

By: Isabel R. Kindle Back to the web version

Last year we wondered whether Ottawa needed a Horticultural Society. Most of us agree that the possibility of NO Horticultural Society is unthinkable.

A beautiful backdrop is provided by the city itself: its natural beauty is increased and emphasized with the maintenance of parks, driveways and flowerbeds. All this must surely be an inspiration to us householders to grow a few cosmos or petunias or a basket of geraniums near the front door. And there are very good reasons, now more than ever, for growing some of our own vegetables.

The honour of being the first woman president in our Society's 89-year history is also a great responsibility. With the help and advice of experienced members: W.M. (Sandy) Cavaye who was SecretaryTreasurer for many years, former presidents including Maurice Marshall who is now District No. 2 Director, Ontario Horticultural Association, our immediate past-president Trevor Cole to name just a few, we should be able to meet our challenges for 1981 with confidence.

New faces, too, are always welcome, both for the pooling of information and for more energetic pursuits such as setting up and dismantling shows.

As one amateur to another I ask you where else, for $2 a year can you attend (or enter) seven shows, gather information from a minimum of a dozen meetings and experience the pleasures of good gardening and good company?

Isabel R. Kindle, President.
