President's Message - 1995
Yearbook 1995 page 1 By: Sandra Parsons Back to the web versionPRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The Ottawa Horticultural Society has been a part of my family for three generations. Once again, members are noticing several generations involved in our monthly meetings and flower shows. This growth in young people in the Society mirrors the growing interest in the 1990's of horticulture as a fascinating, relaxing and refreshing hobby. As a young member coming with my grandmother, I enjoyed the beauty and challenge of gardening presented by the monthly speakers. Through the years, I have realized the important part that the Society has played in the Ottawa community for the last 103 years.
This year, members have contributed expertise, time and financial support to planting projects at schools, the Experimental Farm and the City of Ottawa. The Society also responded to current horticultural interests, such as city naturalization projects, water efficient gardening and urban forests.
Our continuous growth in numbers, to 367 members, prompted the purchase of a new sound system and the cataloguing of the OHS library for easier access. The horticultural abilities of many members were enjoyed by all at our flower shows and famous May plant auction - events not to be missed in 1995. The Show Committee provided excellent advice for first time exhibitors.
I wish to thank all the members, committees, flower show convenors and board members for a wonderful year. It has been a valuable learning experience and above all - it was fun!.
We can all look forward to the program outlined for 1995!
