President's Message - 1999
Yearbook 1999 page 1 By: Josee De Menezes Back to the web versionJOSEE DE MENEZES PRESIDENT - 1997 & 1998
One more busy year. Mother Nature put us on edge last January as freezing rain covered trees, hedges and gardens. We seemed to miss Spring as it raced through our yards. All the hardship was pushed aside as an early and very long summer allowed some healing. Already, we are planning the next gardening season and hoping that our gardens will be even better, weather permitting.
The Horticulture Society is a gathering of friends who talk about life, gardening and share experiences and tips. The different activities carried out by the Society reflect the objectives of the Society. It is the participation, the generosity and the enthusiasm of you, our members, that make those events so special. Be part of a flower show, the garden tour or outings.
Over the past two years, some people have asked about the purpose of the shows. The first show I attended was the Peony and Iris Show. I still remember breathing in the perfume of the different varieties and noting the ones that enticed me. The shapes, the sizes and the colours added to the pleasure of that moment.
The Shows aspire to educate other members and the public by providing an occasion to see many specimens or varieties of plants and to appreciate flowers arranged in artistic displays. Sharing the plants and flowers with other members and the public is a wonderful way to bring to light different varieties and specimen, whether they are rare or less rare, and to learn more about horticulture. Many experienced gardeners exhibit in the Shows and will contribute their knowledge and experience. Nevertheless, there is no requirement to be an expert to show. The only thing that is needed is the desire to share the beauty of the plants and flowers you grow.
I want to thank the outgoing directors and the coordinators of the many committees for their support, guidance and wonderful work during my term as President. It has been a great pleasure working with them. I would also like to thank you for your participation.
I hope the next year will bring you lots of happiness, friendship and a garden full of nice surprises.
