A long lost trophy recovered!
Yearbook 2003 page 47 Back to the web versionHelen Halpenny, President of the Ontario Horticultural Associations District 2, wrote to the OHS last summer to let us know that a woman named Joyce Bergeron was trying to contact us. The women had spoken with Helen at an Almonte midsummer herbfest, where Helen was manning the District 2 Public Relations booth. After a while, Joyce got hold of Anita Price, a former Secretary to the Society and told her she had a trophy to return to the Society. I spoke with Anita recently to find out the story.
While going through some household items, Ms. Bergeron had rediscovered an old trophy that had once been awarded to her father-in-law. Her husband, Wilfred Wallen, often spoke of his fathers wonderful garden with pride. His father had won the trophy, donated by Lord Tweedsmuir, at the 1939 Ottawa Horticultural Society tulip show. Wilfred kept the trophy after his father passed away. After her husband also passed away, Joyce decided to return the trophy to the Society, and that is when she contacted Helen Halpenny. Anita spent an enjoyable day in Almonte, picking up the trophy, and speaking with Joyce. Anita noted that she had a very lovely garden.
