2005 Trillium Awards Page 1 - Trillium Award Winner Craig St. The Garden Competition And Trillium AwardThis competition, created in Centennial year, 1967, is a recognition by the OHS of the efforts of individual citizens to beautify the city. The objective is to find gardens which, when viewed from the street, are the most beautiful (in the opinion of the committee) in three seasons. Many factors are considered, including design, balance, choice, variety and colour of plant material and general condition. All gardens in the postal code are visited in the spring to create a list of potential contenders. These gardens are then revisited in summer and fall. Backyards are not considered. Each year a different postal code is selected based on the length of time since that zone was previously visited. In 2005, postal code K1S was chosen. The committee members are Nathalie Chaly and Sylvia Spasoff. Pictures from the 2005 Trillium Awards - Photos by Jean Stalker
56 Craig St. Trillium Award for Best GardenThis small but perfect garden caught our eye from the beginning with its highly minimalist spring presentation, some bulbs, a few evergreens, a lot of gravel and rock hardscaping in the centre section of the garden - absolutely pristine. As it progressed through the seasons, more plants appeared, the large clump of grasses that framed the right side, the clematis that articulated the walls of the house, the Siberian iris that guarded the sidewalk entrance to the house. In the fall there was a wonderful balance of colour, still very minimalist - the red/browns of the pruned shrub underneath the right window with the Sedum "Autumn Joy". The dark brown branches of the same shrub, with the brown wicker chair, and the unpruned brown seedheads of the siberian iris.Click on the picture to see a larger version
