2005 Trillium Awards Page 5 - Echo Drive

Pictures from the 2005 Trillium Awards - Photos by Jean Stalker

409-411 Echo Drive. The Community Award.

We developed the Community Award this year to recognize gardens which have been created not only for visual appreciation of the passers-by, (and, of course, the satisfaction of the gardener) but for use by people other than the gardeners. The gardeners own the two apartment blocks at 409 and 411 Echo Drive, but are gardening the space for the benefit of all of the apartment dwellers. From the fairly conventional foundation plantings in front of each of the buildings , the eye is drawn to the magnificent maple tree and the larger shrubs which mark the entrance into the deep shady garden between the buildings. A curved path takes one through the garden, full of shade loving plants; a picnic table is hidden behind the maple, for privacy, and when you reach the back there is a patio, and a barbecue. A wonderful oasis for apartment dwellers on steamy summer days.
