OTTAWA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY TRUST FUNDS - 30 NOVEMBER 2006

It was moved by Marilyn Light and seconded by Gwen Bell at the executive meeting in January, that any incoming President should bring to the attention of the Directors the wording of the conditions of the trust funds so that the wishes of the donors will be carried out. 13.11.1989

(Please note that Judy Shedden has been able to shed some light on the history of the people
behind some of the following funds. Her comments are added to the relevant descriptions in brackets and italics).

Shirley beyer Fund

Intent & Use: To be placed in trust and the interest used to award annually a member who has earned the most points throughout that year in the decorative classes.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $1000.00, Accumulated Interest: n/a

(Shirley Beyer was a very active member, exhibiting in the decorative classes as well as serving as a director and editor of the yearbook. Shirley passed away in 2004.)

Audrey Tweedie Fund

Original intent: That the interest from the fund be directed towards the library. If not spent, it will go back into the Society’s general account (12 September 1995). An acknowledgment card should be inserted into each book purchased with these funds.

Current use: Since the library was closed in 2002 and the books were sold, the funds will be
re-directed to promotion of the Society through its publications (ie. website, newsletters,
yearbook).

Amounts: Capital Sum: $1,000.00; Annual Interest:$102.50; Accumulated Interest: $454.62

(Audrey Tweedie, who worked at the NRC, died in 1995. She was society librarian, and in the seventies, there were few if any gardening programs on TV, so the society library was well used and the librarian had an active role at every meeting. – J.S.)

Foundation and Memorial Fund

Original intent: To be used as a general reserve to start at $4,000.00 with the interest to be used for current operations. (01 December 1983).

Current use: Continues to be used for operations. The Foundation Fund purchased $500 in bond holdings from the Harriet Bowman Fund and the Park Fund using its GIC holdings in December 2000.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $5,560.00; Annual Interest: $446.74; Accumulated Interest: $918.88

Helena Jacob Memorial Fund

Original intent: The interest on the fund is to be distributed as follows:

A prize to the value of $20 to be known as the Helen Jacob Memorial Prize to be awarded each year by the Gloucester Horticultural Society in decorative classes at a show at the discretion of the directors of that Society.

A prize to the value of $20 to be known as the Helena Jacob Memorial Prize to be awarded each year to the best decorative arrangement in the amateur classes in the June show of the Ottawa Horticultural Society.

Prizes to the value of $20 each to be known as the Helena Jacob Memorial Prize to be awarded each year by the Indoor Gardeners for the best pot-et-fleur (growing plants and cut flowers) design at the Indoor Gardeners annual show.

The balance of interest earned to be used to encourage new exhibitors in the Ottawa Horticultural Society. Any unspent interest is to accumulate to the fund and be carried forward for the purpose herein named. The expenditure of interest may be deferred from year to year.

The treasurer of the OHS is to make the arrangements for the disposal of the interest as stated above. If necessary, and only after due regard for the wishes of the donor, the Directors may vary the above distribution by majority vote at a Director’s meeting.

The principal may only be used by the society if necessary for a vital purpose of the Society on the unanimous vote of a quorum comprising two thirds of the elected officers and directors of the Society and confirmed by a majority vote at a general meeting of the members of the Society. (18 April 1984).

Current use: Continues to be used for the original purposes.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $1,000.00; Annual Interest: $102.50; Accumulated Interest: $587.75

(Helena Jacob was originally from England, and worked as a part-time librarian. She was a very enthusiastic flower arranger, and after she died, her husband Dick brought her flower arrangement containers to the society and invited the flower arrangers to take turns, each choosing an item from her collection. I have a white, shallow oval container which I have used over the years, and often think of Helena and the "older ladies" when I use it. Helena's Trust Fund was established by members' memorial donations. — J.S.)

Indoor Garden Trust Fund and Bursary

Original intent: The capital sum was held in trust by the Society on behalf of the Indoor Garden Club until 01 April 1994, after which it became permanently held by the Society.

The society shall continue to provide for the bursary of $100.00 (as established by the IGC to Highland Park High School, or its successor, under the Ottawa Board of Education) to assist a graduating student in further formal horticultural studies and the Society may annually expend the interest to promote the cultivation of indoor plants. (13 November 1989).

Current use: Moved Feb. 2005 "That the Board redirects the Indoor Garden Trust Fund and Bursary to support an annual award of total value of $100 to the Ottawa Regional Science Fair. This bursary is to be provided to a student in the senior category who has demonstrated a keen interest, knowledge, and creativity in the areas of horticulture, and/or plant science through an outstanding project." As of 2008 2 $75 prizes at the Ottawa Regional Science Fair are provided by the OHS to winning projects in the junior and intermediate categories that concern plants. A $150 donation is given to the Ottawa Regional Science Fair by the OHS as well.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $1,400.00; Annual Interest: $112.00; Accumulated Interest: $260.00

Kaye Peacock Fund

Original intent: To be placed in trust and the interest used for a special
project (such as a speaker from the RBG) each year, and that whatever use was made, that use must be recorded in the Yearbook each year (13 October 1987)

Current use: Continues to be used for special projects.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $700.00; Annual Interest: $67.24; Accumulated Interest: $581.34

(Kay Peacock was part of the Society before my time. She moved somewhere down around London before we arrived, and as a prize for the decorative classes champion, she sent a lovely pottery container for moribana style arrangements, which I was
fortunate to win, when we first came. When she died, she left the bequest to the Society for a special project. — J.S.)

Muriel Park Trust Fund

Original intent: The capital and interest shall be used for projects in keeping with the
objectives of the Society and as approved by the Board of Directors (13 November 1989).

Current use: Used to help pay for the Millennium and Blue Spruce projects in 2000.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $700.00; Annual Interest: $71.76; Accumulated Interest: $309.06

(Muriel Park was a quiet person. She convened the Tulip Show for years, was a great flower arranger and entered all the shows. When I first came to Ottawa there was a group of half a dozen or so keen competitors in the design section of the shows. I believe her family gave the money to establish the fund in her memory. The capital and interest was to be used for projects in keeping with the objectives of the society. I believe, that because she was such a keen exhibitor, the board used the money very early on, to bring a designer from the Royal Botanical Garden in Hamilton to conduct a workshop on arrangements and judging. — J.S.)

Captain Marshall Memorial Fund

Original intent: The capital sum to be separately accounted for and that the interest only be used to provide annually for the purchase of the Society’s memorial wreath placed on the National War Memorial on the 11th of November each year on behalf of the Society. Any interest in excess of the amount required to purchase a memorial wreath should be used for current Society expenses (13 November 1989).

Current use: Continues to be used to purchase the Remembrance Day wreath each year.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $1,000.00; Annual Interest: $102.50; Accumulated Interest: $414.75

(Maurice Marshall was an ex-military man from England. While Maurice was president, his wife Margaret was a director. He served a term as district director, then vice-president of the Ontario Horticultural Association and the following year, the year that he died, he became president of the OHA. Margaret made the donation in his memory, requesting that the capital sum be retained and only the interest be used to provide for the purchase of the Society's annual memorial wreath, placed at the National War Memorial on the 11th of November. There was no bequest from
Margaret, but this fund was a gift from her. She was on what they called the "ladies’ committee", a group of women who provided refreshments on show setup day, or other social occasions; they attached little strings to entry tags to prepare for shows, addressed envelopes for the yearbook, and other miscellaneous jobs to help with the smooth running of the Society. When I was president, I used to call her the pastoral care co-ordinator. Margaret thoughtfully kept in touch with elderly and ill members, letting them know they were remembered and appreciated. At my request, she also wrote a brief history of the Society's ten years between 1980 and 1990. So although it is the Capt. Maurice Marshall Memorial Trust Fund, it is in fact a memorial to Margaret's foresight and practicality, ensuring that the Society has the funds and continues the Remembrance Day tradition. — J.S.)

R.J. Paynter Memorial Fund

Original intent: To be used in 2 classes in the Ottawa Valley Show, and 2 classes in the OHS Crysanthemum Show with the remaining interest being invested (05 March 1984).

Current use: Two prizes are now awarded at the OHS September Show for the exhibitor
obtaining the highest aggregate in the Horticultural Division, and for the exhibitor obtaining the highest aggregate in the Decorative Division.

Amounts: Capital Sum: $700.00; Annual Interest: $67.26; Accumulated Interest: $533.86
