Tulips from the Spring Bulb Show, 10 May, 2005

For those who wanted the name of the tulips that were declared champions at last week's Spring Flower Show, unfortunately, I could find only "orange lily-flowered tulips' on my planting lists. I suspect that's all the information that came with them, though they were probably bought at Ritchie Feed and Seed.

They make beautiful cut flowers, changing in the light from gold to orange to red in a vase with florist's food, lasting 3-4 days. The same ones left in the garden are smaller and still haven't opened as much, even one that was brought in like the others. Now I know what "good for cutting" means, and also that they should be cut well before they have opened fully. Formerly I didn't bother using tulips as cut flowers because they didn't last long at all - but I should have realized that they will open in captivity, like many other flowers. Good luck in finding some of these or similar ones for fall planting!
