Yearbook 1918

print friendly version

WHAT THE SOCIETY DID LAST YEAR.

Through its war time activities, more than doubled the local production of food.

Took first place among the Horticultural Societies of Canada with a membership of nearly 1,500.

Distributed among the citizens of Ottawa planting material to the value of $2,000.

Awarded money prizes in floral and garden competitions to the amount of $400.

Conducted a four days' course of lectures on home gardening with particular reference to the culture of vegetables; also demonstrations in the canning, drying and storing of fruits and vegetables.

Carried on a war time garden competition and distributed free seeds in connection therewith.

Organized the Ottawa Vacant Lot Association with most successful results.

Under the direction of its Ladies' Auxiliary, raise money for patriotic purposes by the sale of flowers and supplied flowers to the city hospitals.

Held eleven free exhibitions of flowers, vegetables and fruits, which were largely attended by the public.

Did many other useful and practical things for the up building and betterment of the city.

This is a work that must appeal to the civic pride and patriotism of every citizen. Will you help it forward?

You can do so by continuing your membership in the society and by presenting its claims and advantages to your friends and neighbours.
