Report on the Society visit to Montreal in July, 1959 Yearbook 1959 page 1 By: George L. Rosser print friendly versionOHS Yearbook 1959 REPORT ON THE SOCIETY VISIT TO MONTREAL IN JULY, 1959ON SATURDAY, July 11th, 125 members and friends of the Society, headed by President George Rosser. Vice-President R. H. Briggs and Secretary, William M. Cavaye left Lisgar Street at Elgin, at 8.15 a.m., in three air conditioned buses bound for the famous Montreal Botanical Gardens. Three hours later the buses were safely parked in the grounds of the Montreal Botanical Gardens, situated at the corner of Sherbrooke Street East and Pius IX Boulevard in east end Montreal. After an informal lunch period the complete party was met at the entrance of the Administration building by three guides supplied by the Information Section of the Montreal Parks Branch and were shown all the facilities of the gardens, which have been developed gradually according to a preconceived plan during the last twenty-five years. There are 180 acres of grounds in the gardens, located here in Maisonneuve 'Park, a green belt area which Includes the Montreal Municipal Golf Course. These gardens, fast becoming a major tourist attraction in Montreal, comprise an interesting series of related gardens, including the "Garden of Economic Plants"-the "Garden of Medicinal Plants", etc., etc. The highlights pf our visit was the display in the beautiful show greenhouses, which are still under construction, and which are serviced by 28 other greenhouses. The programme of adult and school children's education in things horticultural is extensive, and the garden plots maintained by school children during the summer months were worth examination. After a three hour visit and an hour of free time, the Ottawa party returned to the Capital by different routes, and with the co-operation of the weather a most enjoyable visit was concluded by early evening. The visit was arranged by a committee headed by H. P. Tutchings, John J. Frith and Secretary W. M. Cavaye.
