President's Message - 1966 Yearbook 1966 page 1 By: R. H. Briggs print friendly versionOHS Yearbook 1966 The President's Message The year 1966 will be an important one in the annals of the Ottawa Horticultural Society. First, the Ontario Horticultural Association will hold their annual convention in Ottawa this year on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of June at Carleton University, thus marking the first year the convention has been held in Eastern Ontario. As the 'host' Society we will be expected to provide a major portion of the support necessary to ensure the success of the meeting. We can play our part by welcoming the visitors and making their visit an interesting and enjoyable one. With this end in view a guided bus tour of the city of Ottawa and environs is being planned for the evening of Wednesday the 22nd of June, to be followed by a reception for the visitors. While the following days will be pretty much taken up by the official convention program, many opportunities will present themselves to individual members of the Society to provide hospitality to the visitors and assist and guide them to the many points of interest. Second, the year 1967 is Canada's Centennial year and plans .must be made and put into effect with regard to our own centennial project. Your Board has tentatively decided upon a' garden with plants of Canadian origin. A site for the garden still remains to be chosen as well as the plant material to be used. In order to carry out the project our Public Planting Committee will require considerable help from our very capable members and volunteers will be requested. In addition to proceeding with the above projects, your Board is, endeavouring to carry out the normal activities of the Society. However, this year there will again be an early June show due to the fact that a late June show would conflict with the Convention dates. As you are aware, it has been our policy to have an early June show alternate annually with a late June show. Otherwise, as our program indicates, there has been no change in our regular activities. From the standpoint of weather, let us hope nature will deal with us more kindly in 1966 than in 1965. The above normal snowfall is in itself a good omen. [Signed Ralph H.
