The President's Message

As a new decade begins, the most encouraging message I have heard has been expressed by commentators and intellectuals in close touch with world conditions. The majority seem agreed that, in the 70's, today's youth for whose future we have been so con­cerned, will gradually mature into recognition of their responsibility for tomorrow's world and will accept and meet this responsibility in their desire to survive. Who can say our fears are not groundless, that the protest move­ment is not one of genuine desire for a better world.

To say the least, it is comforting to those who no longer have the will or the energy to maintain the hectic pace we might once have done, to know that there is still a ray of hope for tomorrow, that the world may not, after all, be headed on a course of inevitable self-destruction. "Speed kills" but how fine it is to know that beauti­ful things and beautiful thoughts may still be ours to enjoy, that our lives do not rely entirely on the speed at which the world travels today.

As horticulturists and as plain every­day John Doe's, let us do our share to create beauty in the world about us, not just by planting, caring for and protecting what Nature so bountifully provides, but by our thoughts and ac­tions towards our neighbours and fel­low men. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap". Make certain that the seeds you sow will not bear bitter fruit. Rather, sow the seeds of kindness and yours will be indeed a bountiful harvest.

May 1970 bring you only the best of health, happiness and good gardening.
