President's Message - 1979

Yearbook 1979 page 1

By: J. Joseph Sanders print friendly version

I should like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Officers and Directors for the co-operation and assistance they have given in the planning and execution of the business and events of our Society during the time it has been my pleasure to serve as your president.

I believe you are aware that Ottawa, with her mountains, lakes, rivers and parkways, is a beautiful city. There are many beautiful home grounds where our citizens spend means and efforts to promote beauty. All who live near them or pass by their homes share the results of their skills. Gardening is undoubtedly contagious. A well-planted and neatly kept yard affords an incentive to emulation and residents of whole blocks are brought under the spell of gardening. The gardener, unconsciously perhaps, becomes a powerful factor in beautifying the district in which he lives, and thereby adding to the charm of the city.

Some advice to those who have just started to garden: "Anything you plant in your garden wants to grow and, if the soil's halfway decent and you give it a little help, it will."

Gardening is fun, but it is a lone affair. Seldom, if ever, will a neighbour or acquaintance offer to pull your weeds. This Society wants to help. In time you will be inviting friends to see your garden and, hopefully, will be exhibiting your flowers, fruits and vegetables in our shows. Eventually you may know the ever greater rewards and satisfaction of assisting and serving others in their gardening endeavours.

We have a continuing need for members who are prepared to assist with the various events, take their place on the Board of Directors and, hopefully, become senior Officers of your Society. In this manner, the Society will flourish.

Before closing, I welcome all new members and hope they derive lasting pleasure and profit and make many friends by their association with us.

Our programme for 1979 is interesting and varied. Please participate. We need each other.

All in all, I look forward to the future with great hope, and I wish all our members good weather and good gardening.

J. Joseph Sanders

President
