President's Message - 1983

As we near the end of our ninetieth year members can be pleased with the small but significant increase in our membership. As usual we put on seven flower shows and, in addition, took part in several new activities.

Last winter we manned a table at the federal Study Centre where we sold 35 memberships to Ottawa gardeners interested in the lectures. In the spring and fall we took part in public planting of annuals, perennials and tulips at the Old Forge Community Centre, Causeway House and the Therapeutic Educational Learning Centre Incorporated (known as TELCI). Three trees planted at the Old Forge were in memory of two members, Helena Jacob and Elizabeth Brown and to commemorate the seventy-fifth Anniversary of the Ontario Horticultural Association. In the spring we also helped with the International Lilac Society Conference held here in Ottawa for the first time.

Forty-two members enjoyed our bus trip to Washington, D.C., in September to visit the Dumbarton Gardens.

We were proud to be honoured with First Prize awarded for our 90th Yearbook at the Ontario Horticultural Convention in Guelph in June. My sincere thanks to the year book chairman, Mr. John Robinson for a job well done.

We were even prouder that one of our members - Captain M.D. Marshall, was nominated and elected Second Vice-president of the Ontario Horticultural Association. Then another member, Mr. Aldo Bonini, was awarded Third Prize in the International Dahlia show in Toronto this September. Entries- were from, Canada, the United States, England and Scotland.

As for myself, I cannot adequately express my gratitude for all the help I received during my two years as your president. I especially urge our new members to come to our meetings and to tell their friends our Society is a good one to belong to.
