Highlights 1995

Yearbook 1996 page 22

By: Stephen J. Murphy print friendly version

During 1995 the Society's nine program meetings were attended by an average of seventy members and friends. The Plant Auction, again a financial success, was overseen by auctioneer Marilyn Light. Members participated in six society horticultural shows; as well several members exhibited in the District 2 Flower and Vegetable Show.

The Society also continued with the Trillium Competition, a judging of Ottawa gardens in a selected Postal Zone. The Photographic Competition for slides was also convened.

Meetings in the McNabb Centre auditorium were enhanced by the use of the new (in 1994) sound system. A great calamity was inflicted on the Society's show inventory when, in cleaning up the storage area in the lower level of the Centre, all the Society's materials were inadvertently disposed of. Fortunately the Society's inventory listing resulted in a cash settlement for the materials. With the help of many members and the borrowing of some show materials the 1995 Society shows went ahead as scheduled.

In "1994 Highlights" the priceless collection of local dairy milk bottles was noted. Unfortunately, these bottles were among the items lost in the clean-up. Other sources of specimen display containers have been undertaken by the show convenors.

The Christmas meeting was again a gastronomic success. It appears that members have many talents beyond those in the horticultural field. Congratulations to our cooks and to all who helped in this yearly wind-up. The evening's program consisted of the Photographic Competition slides. Her Worship the Mayor, our Honorary President, again was with us for the presentation of the yearly trophies.

The District 2, Ontario Horticultural Association, meeting held locally and hosted by the Gloucester Horticultural Society had a large delegation from the O.H.S. in attendance.
