District 2 Millennium Tree - The Blue Spruce Yearbook 2000 page 34 By: Owen Munn, District 2 Millennium Project, Committee Chair print friendly versionAt the District 2 Annual General Meeting in April 1999, District Director Helen Halpenny proposed that consideration be given to a special commemorative millennium project which would involve all Horticultural Societies in the District. This proposal was met with approval by all attendees and various suggestions were made as to what form this project could take, such as a tulip bed or a perennial garden. I raised the suggestion of planting a tree, and pointed out the aspects of longevity and ease of maintenance as supporting reasons for my proposal. After further discussion, it was agreed that a tree was the most practical suggestion, especially considering the various hardiness zones throughout the district. Volunteers were then sought to head up a committee to select a suitable tree. I agreed to take on this task. After discussing various options with a tree expert, it was decided that a Blue Spruce would be the most suitable selection, due to its abilities to withstand wind, snow and freezing rain. At the fall Advisory Council meeting in October 1999. I presented this idea, which was then put to a vote, and approval was given to the selection by Council members. As a result, all societies in District 2 will be asked to participate in this project, and, with the support of the District, to plant a Blue Spruce in a conspicuous location in their community.
